THE NFL MISSES RANDY MOSS

Thanksgiving weekend is always a great time to overdose on food and football.  While a couple of the college games were entertaining, the NFL action so far has been lacking.  On paper, at least two of the games should have been compelling, but the only game that was really close was the one that should have been the worst; Miami at Dallas.  The Green Bay vs Detroit game was never really in doubt, while the Harbaugh bowl between the 49er’s and Ravens was either a defensive struggle or an exhibition of offensive ineptitude, depending on your personal viewpoint.  Any way you would like to view it, there wasn’t a game, or even a moment that made you get up off the couch and take notice.  Right now, games in prime slots are missing electric offense.  The NFL is missing guys like Randy Moss.

If you are Minnesota Vikings fan, you know all about Moss and his performance as a rookie in Dallas 13 years ago on Thanksgiving.  But even if you are just a football fan, your memories of Turkey Day probably include the likes of Randy Moss, Barry Sanders, or even John Madden and his six-legged bird.  Sanders and Madden are both gone from the game, yet a guy like Moss shouldn’t be.

The NFL is a more boring place without Randy Moss.  This is a guy that was never perfect in terms of attitude, but also never shredded his QB’s or teammates like Terrell Owens or Keyshawn Johnson did.  He had unthinkable speed for a guy his size.  He allegedly ran a 4.15 40 in training camp back in 2000.  That is ridiculous.  The bottom line is that this guy should be playing somewhere right now.  His speed is not what it was 10 years ago, but in a recent Sports Illustrated poll of current NFL players, Moss ranked in the top 5 of current receivers you would want to have on the other end of a deep bomb/hail mary, and he is not even on a roster right now.

The NFL has plenty of parity in 2011.  What it doesn’t have is young players on offense that make you jump out of your seat.  Sure, if Cam Newton is your fantasy quarterback you are happy, but he is not winning many games.  Adrian Peterson is phenominal, but also is on a losing team and currently hurt.  Larry Fitzgerald, the receiver that was #1 in the aforementioned bomb poll, has been saddled with QB’s that aren’t any good(that includes Kevin Kolb).  Viking fans and Patriot fans will always have some great memories of Randy Moss and big games.  NFL fans will have some of the same memories, just not viewed in the same light.  The bottom line is that we need some more.  The NFL needs some more explosiveness offensively, and some more personality.  Randy coming back would be great, but that is a small window.  Who is the next Moss/Barry Sanders/Walter Payton?
